I've lived in Oakland for years and haven't had the chance to visit Los Cocos. Thanks to an instagram post, I decided to come in and try them out.
Let me tell you as soon as you walk up, your nose is seduced by the smell of pupusas on the plancha. The crispness of the cheese oh man my stomach said yes immediately.
I ordered 2 cheese pupusas and an order of platanos, the other order was cheese and beans pupusas and a quesadilla (bread) and a hot chocolate. The quesadilla was delicious and the hot chocolate tasteful and hot.
The platanos cooked to perfection (I'm very picky about platanos) and the pupusas were STUFFED with food. I love me a stuffy pupusa. The salsa was spicy and that made all the difference for me I love spicy food.
The restaurant employees are super kind, very easy to talk to and loved the friendly atmosphere. The restaurant itself is very homie, private. Parking is slightly difficult since it is located in the Fruitvale area and it is cash only so don't forget your cash!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Diana C.Alameda, CA51121Mar 21, 2024Updated review
Los Cocos really does taste like Salvadoran food! The pupusas, casamiento, platanos, horchata......all taste like they were made by somebody who really comes from El Salvador and makes Pupusas the way the restaurants in El Salvador There's no pretentiousness to the restaurant or the menu. It's the real deal! Thank you to the owner Mrs. Gonzalez for going the extra mile for my daughter's 15th Birthday Celebration. Mrs. Gonzalez showed up w delicious warm pupusas that everybody loved!!!
I went again recently to celebrate with my daughters and we had the best pupusas. If you want an authentic pupusa and dessert and horchata, this is the most authentic in town.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 21, 2018Previous reviewNormally I would never rate a restaurant like this, but after my last visit, I will. I've gone to this place about ten times or more. I usually order pupusas, an horchata, platanos, casamiento and kolachampan. Pretty simple. I've had some other dishes here and there. But the last few times I went I noticed a few things that bothered me. The owner is not nice. She really is not welcoming or polite or anything that you would want from an owner. She acts like she's doing you a favor by having a Salvadoran restaurant in town. Why can't they cover the food, why can't they get the horchata out of a nice container and not a bucket. I get it has that third world feel to it because I've been there, but honestly this last time when I had to ask for a cup for my soda, ask for a straw, ask for napkins, then I had a rubbery platano that I couldn't finish and she wasn't nice to my friend, that was it. What bothers me the most......why is it so hard to clean the decorations, why can't you just make it nice. You make enough money from the hipsters that eat there and you can just clean a little bit. Sheesh. This is not El Salvador, where you have a little table on the street corner. You have this restaurant, you make good money selling pupusas. The food is pretty good most of the time and super authentic, a little too authentic with the bucket for horchata. Just make an effort to make it nice sheesh. That's all. Give Salvadoran something to feel proud of when the take their friends. Get some new posters. Clean the wooden mango decorations...they look like dirty little mangos. I'm serious. This is not okay.

Walked into los cocos after exploring fruitvale a bit. The ambience was very homey and warm, you are immediately inundated with the smell of pupusas on the skillet. Service is prompt, friendly, and attentive.
We ordered 2 pupusas (revuelta and arroz con queso), pollo en salsa, Salvadoran quesadilla, an order of empanadas de leche, and Salvadoran horchata
The food was superb. It goes without saying that its authentic food and recipes, the pupusas will fulfill your craving but have to admit that the pollo con salsa was perfect and cooked similarly to the way my mother cooks it.
If you're feeling homesick or nostalgic, if you are craving pupusas, or of you're curious about Salvadorean cuisine, this place is worth checking out.
Other Perks include its short distance walk from fruitvale bart and proximity to other shops you might want to patron.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 244189446Mar 2, 2024

Rude owner. Food servings are small and they guard napkins, utensils and extra plates like police.

Went to Alameda's monthly Antique Fair and was craving pupusas and found this lovely hole-in-the-wall spot near Fruitvale area.
We ordered revueltas and one of them being a cheese and bean pupusa with plantains; it comes with slaw and tomato salsa. I also ordered horchata because I can never pass up on Salvadorian horchata! It's literally my favorite- it's more nutty and toned down especially if you don't like super sweet horchata.
The pupusas were delicious, masa was fluffy and had some crispy edges. The revueltas had a bit more cheese than what I'm accustomed to, usually the cheese, beans and chicharrones are more evenly mixed but that's just the ONE critique I had. The slaw was really good and not drowned in juice. Salsa had a bit of a kick to it and was a little spicy which just made everything taste even better.
Btw this place is cash only! I'd definitely suggest this place if you're craving pupusas.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Chelsea P.San Fernando, CA2401812Feb 11, 2024
Just a Salvadoran girl homesick for pupusas. I was recommended this place from a coworker and I decided to go. There wasn't parking so I had to park in the residential area. The minute you walk in, there was the smoke from the grill of the pupusas and it definitely felt like home. I ordered in the front and the owner said to take a seat and pay afterwards. The owner does speak Spanish and English, I accidentally used my Spanglish. I got my usual favorite bean and cheese pupusa and revueltas. I love the pupusas I was just missing the tomato sauce that you can add on the side. The curtido was pickled and not spicy. The hot sauce they made I think was pretty spicy. Will come again to try other things besides pupusas. Also the prices isn't updated for the pupusas which I thought was weird. It was around $4.75 for each pupusa. They don't give receipts and cash only.

I ate pupusas de revuelta with casamiento and they were delicious. I'm glad I gave this place a chance. The ladies/owners were very friendly and hospitable. I know people might think it's in a dangerous area but honestly I never felt unsafe. Give it a try and make your own judgement.

BOMB tasting pupusas... the lady cooking is awesome. The lady behind the register... well she should get up off her phone and HELP the cook because while the cook lady is busting her ass and getting backup by work the register lady is chilling on her phone. I personally gave the cook a tip for all her hard work that I saw while I ate.
