OAKLAND, CA January 4, 2010. You may have made jokes about studying pot when you were in college, but you probably never thought you'd be able to get a degree in it. Oaksterdam University is the U.S.'s first cannabis college, with a mission to "Provide Quality Training for the Cannabis Industry." Founded in 2007, Oaksterdam U now educates thousands of students a year, most from California but others fly in from around the US and even other countries specifically for the classes in pot politics, budtending, horticulture and cooking including pot pesto. Though some attend out of personal interest, others are here to learn how to start a Medical Marijuana practice or have been sent by employers who want them to learn about the industry before working at a medical marijuana center. The basic 101 Weekend Classic Course includes instruction in: * Federal vs State Law * Politics & History * Legal Rights - what is a qualified patient and how do you become one? * Horticulture - How to grow cannabis from start through harvest * Methods of Ingestion - Extracts and Cooking * Patient Relations * Science of Cannabis - how it affects your body. The advanced course includes legal business structures for setting up legal dispensaries and "Know Your Rights" workshop.
